Background
In January of 2022, the International Long shore and Warehouse Union Local 505 (ILWU 505) announced a phased distribution of ILWU 505 long shore applications. It was decided by the union that each union member would receive one application for distribution. As a union, they also agreed to issue 5 applications to the Lax Kw’alaams Band, for casual employment.
There is a total of 342 applications, including the 5 applications issued to the Lax Kw’alaams Band, that will be dispersed in phases. This will allow for training to happen in smaller groups. The order that the groups of applications are arranged are chosen through a random draw by the union. The 5 applications issued to the Lax Kw’alaams Band were subject to the same draw, and will be distributed to the Lax Kw’alaams Membership as they become available.
In January 2022, Lax Kw’alaams did not receive any ILWU applications. On February 28th, 2022, Lax Kw’alaams distributed 2 of the 5 total applications. On March 13th, Lax Kw’alaams was notified of 2 available applications for distribution to the membership. There is one more application set aside for Lax Kw’alaams but is not available for distribution yet.

Hello Lax Kw’alaams members,
We welcome you to this year’s Coast Tsimshian Career Booklet, Opportunities. This year we have moved our annual career fair to print, due to the restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic. This annual initiative is coordinated in partnership by Lax Kw’alaams Business Development and Metlakatla Development Corporation.
We are glad that you have picked up this book and are interested in learning about the different career opportunities available to you within our traditional territory and beyond. This book is intended to assist you with finding meaningful employment, learning about the different training opportunities that lead to employment, and understanding the ways that unions can help you achieve your career objectives.
In this booklet, we aim to highlight a variety of companies working in the traditional territory of the Coast Tsimshian. Our business partners (joint venture companies working with Lax Kw’alaams and Metlakatla) will be highlighted with a Coast Tsimshian Enterprises logo beside their company name. Each company will provide you with the contact information for the local hiring person, training coordinator or union representative, who you may contact directly if you have any questions for their organization. Each submission gives a brief description of their projects planned for the coming year and the location of their work – so you, our members, understand some of the projects planned within the territory.
Our goal at the end of the day is to increase employment and training opportunities for Lax Kw’alaams and Metlakatla members. This is our first year creating a print resource for you, and if you find it beneficial, please let us know – we would like to hear your feedback. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Every year, the Lax Kw’alaams Business Development, in partnership with Metlakatla Development Corporation, host the Annual Coast Tsimshian Career Fair. Today marks exactly 1 year since our last Career Fair, held in person at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre Auditorium.

Jessica Lincoln and Lisa Girbav at the annual Coast Tsimshian Career Fair. Photo taken March 11, 2020, before social distancing, face masks and “bubbles” were common practice! Hand sanitizers were plentiful at this event.
March 11, 2021, also marks the 1 year anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO) characterizing the spread of COVID-19 as a pandemic. Since our last Coast Tsimshian Career Fair, we’ve had to do things a little differently. So this year, we developed a career booklet, titled, Opportunities.

Inside this booklet you’ll find information of 47 different organizations, including 31 potential employers, 12 different training providers, and 4 union organizations. Each company will discuss their projects, their upcoming employment and training opportunities, as well as projects proposed for our traditional territory and beyond! Our goal at the end of the day is to increase employment and training opportunities for Lax Kw’alaams and Metlakatla members.
Opportunities will be available in the next week, as we are just waiting for the book to come back from the printer. We will also be releasing Opportunities online in early April. Please keep an eye on the Lax Kw’alaams Business Development Facebook page for more information on how to get your copy.
